Mark Harmon, despite his departure from NCIS during season 19, is set to make a comeback within the NCIS universe with the new prequel series entitled NCIS: Origins. This spinoff delves into the early years of Leroy Gibbs, the pivotal character around whom the NCIS franchise has revolved since its inception.
The original NCIS series, which sprang from a spinoff of the show JAG in 2003, has become an enduring TV staple, primarily centered on Gibbs, portrayed by Mark Harmon. Harmon led the NCIS team for an impressive 19 seasons before bidding farewell to the character in 2021. Now, as various spinoffs and the original series continue, a new prequel series, NCIS: Origins, has emerged, bringing Harmon back to the NCIS fold after a brief hiatus.
Announced in early 2024, amid the delayed fall lineups of many networks, NCIS: Origins is poised to explore Gibbs’ earlier years. Mark Harmon, alongside his son Sean, will serve as executive producers on the series. Although Sean Harmon previously portrayed a young Gibbs in flashbacks, he won’t be reprising the role in this prequel. Mark Harmon will provide narration for the series, set in the 1990s, indicating his presence in a storytelling capacity rather than in a physical appearance.
The series will be spearheaded by writers David J. North and Gina Lucity Monreal, who will co-pen the premiere episode and take on co-showrunner responsibilities. While details about the cast remain scant, given the prequel’s ’90s setting, it’s improbable that familiar faces from NCIS will appear. Instead, new actors will likely step into unfamiliar roles within the NCIS universe. The narrative framework of NCIS: Origins revolves around Gibbs’ early days at NCIS Camp Pendleton, where he collaborates with esteemed agent Mike Franks. Presumably, the series will blend procedural elements with character-driven storytelling, shedding light on Gibbs’ ascent within the agency and his prowess as an investigator that eventually leads him to become the Supervisory Agent.
