Mark Harmon, known for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the long-running CBS series NCIS, is making a return to the franchise but not as fans might expect. Instead of reprising his iconic character, Harmon will be involved in an NCIS prequel titled NCIS: Origins.
In this prequel, Sean Harmon, Mark’s son, will play the younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, while Mark Harmon will serve as the narrator. The series, set to begin in 1991, explores Gibbs’ early years as a new special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office, where he finds his place on a team led by NCIS veteran Mike Franks. The prequel aims to provide a complex and mysterious backstory for the beloved character, introducing fan-favorite characters and new ones.
The idea for NCIS: Origins came from Sean Harmon, who pitched the concept to NCIS writers-producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, along with CBS Studios. The series is expected to build on the rich legacy of Gibbs while delving into the character’s formative years.
This news comes more than a year after Mark Harmon left NCIS at the start of Season 19. In the season’s fourth episode, Gibbs, along with NCIS Senior Field Agent Timothy McGee, travels to Alaska for a case, where Gibbs decides to stay instead of returning to Washington D.C., citing a sense of peace he hadn’t felt since the deaths of his wife Shannon and daughter Kelly.
The departure left the door open for Gibbs’ potential return, and the announcement of NCIS: Origins adds a new dimension to the beloved character’s story. Harmon had previously hinted at Gibbs not being “retired,” and the prequel series allows viewers to explore the character’s history.
While there were speculations about Mark Harmon’s return to NCIS in a part-time capacity, it seems his focus has shifted to contributing to the franchise in a different and exciting way. NCIS: Origins joins the expanding NCIS universe and is expected to provide fans with a fresh perspective on the iconic character.
