The upcoming tribute episode of NCIS, titled ‘The Stories We Leave Behind,’ has been confirmed by CBS with details on how it will honor the late David McCallum, who portrayed Dr. Donald Mallard (Ducky) for 20 seasons until his passing in September last year.
Scheduled to air on February 19, shortly after the commencement of season 21, the episode will address McCallum’s death and pay tribute to his iconic character. The plot revolves around the NCIS team mourning Ducky’s loss while working on one of his unfinished cases, involving a woman with a connection to a dishonorably discharged Marine.
Co-written by Brian Dietzen, who plays Ducky’s protégé Dr. Jimmy Palmer, the episode promises poignant moments as the team reflects on their memories of Ducky. The co-showrunners and executive producers, Steven D. Binder and David North, emphasized the importance of honoring the legendary actor and friend. They revealed that even after his character’s passing, Ducky will solve one last crime with the team, showcasing his meticulous and compassionate nature.
The producers teased a “very touching and special moment” in the episode, hinting at potential special guest appearances. The tribute aims to celebrate McCallum’s legacy, acknowledging his contributions as both an actor and author.
In September, the NCIS franchise paid tribute to McCallum, describing him as a gifted actor and author beloved by many worldwide. The upcoming season 21 of NCIS begins on February 12 in the US, while seasons 1-20 are available for streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
