A preview for the upcoming 21st season of the enduring police procedural series NCIS hints at a special tribute episode dedicated to the late David McCallum, a longstanding star of the franchise. McCallum, who portrayed Dr. Donald Mallard (Ducky) since the show’s inception in 2003, passed away in September 2023.
The teaser, shared on the official NCIS Instagram page, showcases Dr. Jimmy Palmer (played by Brian Dietzen) appearing distressed at what seems to be a gathering in memory of his friend and former mentor. In a poignant voiceover, McCallum’s words echo, stating, “Yesterday is over. Change is the essence of life.”
The franchise had previously confirmed plans for a tribute episode, co-written by Dietzen and set to air on February 19 in the US. In this special episode, the team learns of Ducky’s passing and reflects on their memories, paying homage to the legendary actor. Showrunners David North and Steven D Binder expressed the importance of honoring McCallum, emphasizing that, in true Ducky fashion, he posthumously aids the team in solving one last crime.
The teaser also alludes to the ongoing storyline involving Nick Torres, played by Wilmer Valderrama, who is seen being arrested. As Gary Cole’s Alden Parker informs the team of the news, Torres urges them not to intervene.
Prepare for the return of NCIS Season 21 on February 12, with the special tribute episode dedicated to David McCallum airing on February 19 in the US. All 20 previous seasons are available for streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
