The highly anticipated 21st season of CBS’s NCIS is set to return on February 12, and a recently released full-length trailer has given fans a glimpse into what they can expect. The trailer includes a poignant moment featuring Brian Dietzen’s character, Dr. Jimmy Palmer, visibly distressed as he stands over what appears to be the lifeless body of David McCallum’s character, Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard. McCallum, who portrayed Ducky from the show’s inception, passed away in September at the age of 90.
The emotional clip, coupled with McCallum’s voiceover saying, “Yesterday is over. Change is the essence of life,” left fans in tears. Social media was flooded with reactions, with viewers expressing their sadness over Ducky’s absence and praising the impact of both the character and the actor.
The tribute episode, co-written by Brian Dietzen and executive producer Scott Williams, is scheduled to air on February 19. In this episode, the team learns of Ducky’s passing and reflects on their memories of him. Co-showrunners and executive producers Steven D. Binder and David North hinted at Ducky’s posthumous contribution, stating, “And true to Ducky’s meticulous and compassionate nature, even after he’s gone, he still manages to solve one last crime with the team.”
The trailer also unveils a major storyline involving Special Agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), who faced intense moments in the season 20 finale. Torres, having threatened to kill a mysterious figure from his past, is seen being arrested in the new footage. In a pre-recorded video, Torres instructs his team not to intervene, revealing that he has been charged with murder. The gripping revelation adds suspense to the unfolding drama, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the season premiere.
The previous season concluded with Torres going undercover in prison to extract information about a Russian spy plot and an imminent terrorist attack. During his mission, he encounters a mysterious individual from his past, ultimately confronting and threatening him. The season ended on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers uncertain about Torres’s actions and the fate of the enigmatic character from his past.
NCIS Season 21 is scheduled to premiere on CBS on February 12 at 9 pm.
