In an interview with HELLO!, actors Jason Antoon and Seana Kofoed offered insights into the upcoming episode of NCIS: Hawai’i, set to pay tribute to the late David McCallum, renowned for his portrayal of medical examiner Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard.
The forthcoming episode, titled ‘Crash and Burn,’ is scheduled to air on Monday, February 19, immediately following the flagship show NCIS, dedicated to honoring David’s legacy. Antoon, who portrays Ernie Malik in the Hawai’i spinoff, expressed the emotional impact of the tribute, noting Brian Dietzen’s admiration for David both as a person and a character.
Antoon remarked, “Brian Dietzen has always spoken very highly of David as a person and as a character, so seeing that sneak peek of next week when he comes to his house, it’s like, ‘Oh god, I can’t even watch’. It’s going to be very moving for people who have watched that mothership show for 20-something years with him, it’s going to be like a family member dying.”
Kofoed, who plays medical examiner and U.S. Navy Commander Carla Chase, disclosed that NCIS: Hawai’i will also pay homage to David, incorporating references to Ducky throughout the episode.
She mentioned, “Scriptually, there’s one or two nods peppered in. I know Chase talks about learning from her mentor.”
Additionally, a trailer for the tribute episode titled ‘The Stories We Leave Behind,’ co-written by Brian Dietzen, was released earlier in the week. The episode will feature the NCIS team mourning Ducky’s passing while reflecting on their cherished memories of him. Ducky will also aid the team in solving one final case, as teased in the trailer.
While fans speculate about potential appearances from former stars like Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly, co-showrunners Steven D. Binder and David North remained tight-lipped, hinting only at a “very touching and special moment you won’t want to miss” in an interview with TVLine.
NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i air on Mondays on CBS at 9 and 10 pm respectively.
