Following his unexpected return as Tony DiNozzo in NCIS season 21, episode 2, Michael Weatherly has broken his silence with a new social media post. Weatherly’s surprise appearance in a tribute episode dedicated to David McCallum has left viewers buzzing with excitement.
The actor took to social media to express his gratitude, thanking the cast and crew for their hard work. Despite DiNozzo’s reappearance being currently a one-off, Weatherly’s interest in returning to NCIS suggests potential for more stories in the future.
Nearly a decade since his departure from the CBS police procedural, Weatherly reprised his iconic role as the “Very Special Agent.” His cameo came as a shock to fans, especially since Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs seemed a more likely candidate for a return, given his longstanding friendship with Dr. Mallard.
DiNozzo’s return was warmly received by fans, and Weatherly celebrated it with his social media post. He was pictured alongside director and NCIS: LA star Daniela Ruah, who is set to helm several episodes in the NCIS universe this year. Weatherly also praised Brian Dietzen, who plays Jimmy Palmer, for co-writing the Ducky tribute episode with Scott Williams.
Since leaving NCIS due to discovering his secret daughter with former teammate Ziva David, DiNozzo hadn’t made any appearances until season 21’s tribute to Ducky. Chosen as the original character to appear, DiNozzo’s friendship with Palmer played a significant role in the storyline, as Palmer struggled to come to terms with his mentor’s passing.
While Weatherly’s return to NCIS is currently planned as a one-time event, there’s potential for his character to make a more significant comeback, especially considering his connections with Palmer and McGee. Weatherly has expressed interest in returning, feeling there are still untold stories for DiNozzo to explore.
With his CBS series Bull concluded, Weatherly now has more flexibility to make a return to NCIS a reality. As Ducky becomes the last original character to depart from the show, the possibility of DiNozzo’s return becomes increasingly enticing for long-time viewers.
