In a surprising turn of events in 2024, the vast and expanding shared universe dominating pop culture isn’t superheroes or fantasy realms but the enduring world of NCIS. CBS has just announced a straight-to-series order for “NCIS: Origins,” marking yet another addition to this ever-expanding universe centered around Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
The prequel series, set in 1991 before the events of NCIS, delves into the earlier days of Gibbs as a young and budding special agent at the nascent NCIS Camp Pendleton office. It details his journey as he finds his footing within a team led by the revered Mike Franks.
Following his departure from the 19th season of NCIS, Mark Harmon returns to the franchise to narrate “Origins.” However, a new actor will step into the role of the younger Gibbs, leading to a frenzy among male actors in their 20s and 30s vying for the opportunity. Harmon will also serve as an executive producer, alongside his son Sean Harmon, who has previously portrayed a younger Gibbs. Additionally, Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, both veterans with a decade-long tenure writing for the flagship series, will act as co-showrunners.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Sean Harmon highlighted the significance of Gibbs in his life and his eagerness to explore the character’s earlier years. Monreal and North echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the revelation of unseen facets of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, promising surprises even for the most dedicated NCIS fans.
For those keeping track, the NCIS universe originated in 2002 with the spinoff from JAG. Since then, it has proliferated into various successful iterations including NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Sydney, as well as the less successful NCIS: Red. The franchise has also intersected with shows like Hawaii Five-0 and Scorpion.
“NCIS: Origins” is slated to premiere in the upcoming 2024-2025 TV season on CBS, marking another significant milestone in the enduring legacy of the NCIS universe.
