Linda Hunt, famously known for her portrayal of Henrietta “Hetty” Lange on NCIS: Los Angeles, recently surfaced in a throwback photo, showcasing an almost unrecognizable appearance from almost four decades ago.
In a snapshot from 1985, Hunt presented the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 57th Academy Awards, exhibiting a notably different appearance compared to her iconic look as Hetty. Before gaining recognition for her role in NCIS, she made headlines by winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1984, a historic win as the first person to receive the accolade for portraying a character of the opposite gender. Her role as Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously earned her this esteemed honor, presented by Dyan Cannon and Gene Hackman.
In another appearance at the Oscars the following year, Hunt presented the Best Supporting Actor award to Don Ameche for Cocoon. Adorned in a high-necked sequin gown and sporting a shorter hairstyle, she exhibited a far cry from the familiar Hetty look fans have come to cherish.
Before gracing the screens as Hetty in 2009, Linda Hunt had a notable career, featuring guest roles on Without a Trace and The Practice, and starring in films such as Kindergarten Cop, Stranger Than Fiction, and the 1984 adaptation of Dune. Her diverse career also includes voice acting for Grandmother Willow in Disney’s Pocahontas and its sequel, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World.
Hetty, known for her commanding presence despite her stature, became a fan favorite on NCIS: Los Angeles. However, Hunt’s appearances on the show became sporadic over the years due to various reasons, including recovery from a car accident and pandemic-related constraints preventing her return to set.
While NCIS: Los Angeles concluded after its 14th season, fans of the franchise can still indulge in the original NCIS, NCIS: Hawaii, and NCIS: New Orleans. As Hollywood grapples with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes, the schedule for the NCIS universe’s upcoming seasons remains uncertain, possibly not hitting screens until at least 2024.
Viewers can stream NCIS: Los Angeles on Sky and NOW in the UK and on CBS in the US.
