NCIS star Brian Dietzen has opened up about his poignant final conversation with co-star David McCallum, who portrayed Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard on the beloved police procedural. McCallum passed away at the age of 90 in September, leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans worldwide.
Reflecting on their last chat, Dietzen shared with People, “I’ll say that I got to speak to him on his birthday, which was wonderful. That was on a Tuesday. He ended up passing away that weekend, so he was already in the hospital and obviously not doing very well.”
During their conversation, McCallum was grappling with health issues, but he found solace in connecting with loved ones. Dietzen expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have a meaningful exchange with the veteran actor during his final days.
While Dietzen opted to keep the details of their conversation private, he emphasized the significance of being able to convey his feelings to McCallum. “I will say I’m so glad that I got to speak to him one last time and I got to tell him how I felt. And so that was really meaningful,” he added.
In a heartfelt tribute, NCIS honored McCallum with an episode titled ‘The Stories We Leave Behind.’ Co-written by Dietzen and Scott Williams, the episode provided a platform for the cast and crew to bid farewell to Ducky while tackling one of his unfinished cases.
Dietzen, who portrays chief medical examiner Dr. Jimmy Palmer, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to co-write the episode, acknowledging the significance of commemorating McCallum’s legacy in this manner.
NCIS continues to captivate audiences with its compelling storytelling and beloved characters. As fans mourn the loss of McCallum, his contributions to the series will forever be remembered and cherished.
