NCIS: Origins Exclusive! Mark Harmon’s Comeback and Returning Characters Revealed!

NCIS enthusiasts are in for a treat as the show returns with its 21st season on February 12. Excitingly, a new spin-off titled “NCIS: Origins” has been announced, bringing back Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Unlike other spin-offs, this one takes a unique approach by delving into the past, exploring Gibbs’s early years.

“NCIS: Origins” is a prequel series that traces the origins of a young Gibbs, freshly recruited as a special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office. The setting is 1991, predating the flagship series, and the show will feature a new, younger actor portraying Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Mark Harmon, at 72, will act as the narrator, akin to “Young Sheldon.”

The concept for the prequel came from Sean Harmon, Mark’s son, who had previously played a younger version of Gibbs on seven episodes between 2008 and 2020. Sean, now 35, is excited about producing the series alongside NCIS writers-producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North and his father. Sean expressed his long-standing connection with the character of Gibbs and his eagerness to reveal a new side of this beloved character.

Returning characters in the prequel series include Mike Franks, portrayed by Muse Watson in the flagship series, and Special Agent Vera Strickland, Franks’s former partner, played by Roma Maffia on NCIS. While Mark Harmon will reprise his role as Gibbs, the casting for other roles in the prequel remains open for new talent.

As for the release date, “NCIS: Origins” is scheduled to premiere in the upcoming fall lineup on CBS, with episodes also available on Paramount+. Fans can anticipate an engaging exploration of Gibbs’s formative years and a fresh perspective on the character they’ve come to love over the years.
